COMMISSIONER TURNER LEADS BLACKBELT DELEGATION TO WASHINGTON

Commissioner Albert Turner was joined in Washington DC by Wilcox County Commissioner Reginald Southall as the Commissioners met with Alabama United States Senator Jeff Session. The Commissioners were lobbying for Alabama Highway 5 which runs through Perry, Dallas, Bibb, Clark, Hale and Wilcox counties in Alabama’s Black Belt to become a four lane highway.

Turner was joined later by commissioners from other effective counties to discuss the economic engine that would open up one of the poorest regions in the country. Commissioner Turner’s message was clear, “until the Black Belt region is open up for business, the state of Alabama will remain behind”. Alabama 5 is the most traveled two lane highway in the state of Alabama. It is a direct artery from the North to the South of the state. The interstate system in Alabama goes around the Black Belt counties of Alabama thus making attracting good paying jobs harder.

The meeting with Senator Session was productive and informative as the Senator is a native of Wilcox County. Commissioner Turner noted that the Senator has been very helpful in the past on large highway projects and he will be looking for his help on this project. Commissioner Turner compared the new four lane highway coming through the region to oil being discovered in Texas
